Medicae question Empty
PostSubject: Medicae question   Medicae question EmptySun Jan 24, 2010 12:54 am

So because I'm awesome and want to be of help to the group, I'm getting medicae (already have the packs) and will eventually try to blow 500 Gelt on the medicae tech priest mechandrite (+10 to test) and someday master chirurgen (another +10). It's also like one of the only incentives for me to upgrade my intelligence.

Now I was always told you couldn't apply first aid/medicae in combat (which makes the ability seems infinitely worse, as it's only useful in between fights at places with no emergency rooms), but after reading the book it makes it sound like First Aid is a "quick fix" that is just an intelligence test...like any other test. Why can't I use it in combat (obviously Extended Care is out of combat).

You can use it in combat. The only stipulation is that it can only be used one time for each wound a person has taken. So if someone is shot and takes 8 damage you could try and use medicae once to try and heal back some of the damage. So you can't just sit there and use it over and over until the person is back to full health.

As is the usual for us, we tend to talk out of our asses most of the time when it comes to these sorts of things. When in doubt, read the documentation. Smile

Medicae can be used in combat, and if succesfully used on someone that is barely hurt, it will heal them for your Int. Bonus (likely 3-4).

If used on a heavily wounded person it heals them for 1 wound.

Critically wounded people recover 1 critical damage.

If you fail normally nothing happens.

If you fail by 30 or more, they take a wound. If they were out of wounds when this happened, they take a toughness test and likely (none of us have really high toughness) die.

You can attempt to heal the person once each time they are wounded (or basically each time they are wounded after having previously been healed).

It takes your entire turn to attempt to heal the person, and you must be in the adjacent square to do so (meaning you had to move there in a previous turn)

The most likely events that will take place are healing someone for a single wound as they are "heavily wounded", or attempting to heal someone for critical damage (a single point) with a 40~~ % chance to heal them, and a 20~~ % chance to kill them.

Honestly now that I have medicae I look forward to being able to employ more strategy than just shooting people (as awesome as I am at that). Now I can try to hide behind a shelf and heal myself, use the terrain more, try to go heal a buddy, etc. Between being able to unjam someone's weapon and hopefully soon being able to heal really well I think my character will become a real utility to a Dark Heresy party.

Exactly, and if the first session was any indication as to the difficulty of further encounters, we're going to need as much support as we can get.

Expect the fights to be more hectic and more nastier as the weeks go on. Having more than one person able to heal the party is never a bad thing.

I am however sorry to say that during week 3 there will be no purchasing again. I reiterate, keeping track of your ammo is vital.

You can still use exp to gain abilities etc, but as for gear, nothing new other than what you're picking up. Also please keep note of the weight you are carrying.

I actually almost considered picking up Medicae myself as it is available to "Assassin" rank assassins, but didn't as my characters intelligence is too low to reliably use the ability, even with a medkit. Also there are no supporting skills/talents for it in the assassin trees.

But I have been focusing on picking up more skills and talents related to infiltration and information gathering, so at least we'll soon have a character in the group the can more reliably get information out of people, as well as get into places that they shouldn't and pretend to be people that they're not. I've been putting a lot of experience and eventually I will put a lot of cash also into medicae. I now have 40 int, and as soon as we finally get to a place in the campaign with tech priests (or just good technology) I am gonna spend 500 thrones to get the medical mechandrite (and whatever other parts I can afford by then).

I've made a lot of progress in sculpting and building my tech priest model. By Saturday I might have medical, manipulator, and optical mechandrite modeled on (I found out in the FAQ that I can only have 3 currently so those are the three I am saving up my cash and exp for).

But yeah Colby was right- it takes a full action by you and the other person. So in the future before people slide out of lightly wounded, they should run next to me, I do something else, they delay action, and then I heal them.
