Round 1: Pitched Battle, Primary Objective: kill points, Secondary Obj: Unit in opponent’s deployment zone, Tertiary Obj: Unit in your own deployment zone with no opponent units in zone

I was matched up against Mike Cave a local player using his Guard army. List was something like:
Command Squad with Officer of the Fleet, Astropath, 3 flamers
Chimera (guns)
Psyker Battle Squad
Chimera(guns)
Vet Squad x 10 w/ 3 melta
Chimera (flamer)
Vet Squad x 10 w/ 3 melta
Chimera (flamer)
Vet Squad x 10 w/ 3 plas
Chimera (guns)
Vet Squad x 10 w/ 3 plas
Chimera (guns)
Banewolf x3 (separate squads) Heavy flamer
Demolisher
Demolisher
Medusa

I won the roll for first turn and set up 1 each Fire dragons and Dire Avengers on each side of the table about 18” from the outside edges, with Dire Avengers closest to the center. I put the Dark Reapers dead center in my zone in a ruin. Avatar and Wraithlords form a wall in front of Eldrad’s wave serpent (with Avengers) just off center to my right.

Mike sets up a Triangle shaped castle formation on my left flank in order to exploit my weaker army side and make my big hitters walk through the middle of the table taking his guns in the face. He leaves all 3 banewolfs in reserve to come in and threaten any units I move towards his board edge with their 12 inch move and shoot speed. I use Eldrad’s redeploy ability and roll a 6 letting me move His wave serpent with Wraithlords and Avatar wall over to the left center flank to attempt to mash up against his guns and hopefully do damage early.

Mike fails to seize the initiative and I fortune Eldrad’s Serpent and the Avatar while guiding a Wraithlord, then Aggressively move my right Fire Dragons 24 inches up the right middle to create a V around his corner formation, using Eldrad’s Serpent as the point on the V, and the Left Fire Dragons and the left front. The combined shooting of the 2 Wraithlords, the Second Dire Avenger Serpent, and Dark Reapers fail to either hit anything or do damage.

Bottom 1: Mike moves one each Melta and Plasma vets out to my right down the battle line in order to counter my Fire Dragons and brings along the command squad chimera for judicious orders. Everything else lines up shots on my main forces in the center. Thanks in part to unfortunate rolls from Mike and a few too many cover saves on my wave serpents and the Fortuned avatar, and the entire army’s shooting bounces off me only shaking both fire dragon wave serpents.

Turn 2: I dump the right fire dragons out and move into position to shoot any of the chimera’s or either vet squad, while positioning my other fire dragons right in front of his demolisher, and sliding Eldrad into support of the right flank, and continuing to hide the second set of Avengers in the back for pot shots. I use the shaken fire dragon wave serpent on the right to force the plasma vets closer to the table edge and more clumped near their chimera than previously. The Dark reaper Exarch single handedly shoots 11 unsavable wounds into the melta vets killing them, while Eldrad’s wave serpent blows up their chimera, leaving the fire dragons free to blow up the plasma vets’ chimera and the resulting explosion wounds enough to send them running off the table. The left fire dragons take out one of the demolishers while the wraithlords expertly miss a bunch. A why the heck not shot from the Avenger wave serpent managed to penetrate the hiding medusa, which fails its cover save and promply blows up.

Bottom of 2: Mike consolidates his losses and uses the command squad’s chimera to flame the right fire dragons into oblivion and the Psyker battle squads’ chimera does the same to the left fire dragons, but requires an assist from the intact Demolisher. The other Melta vet chimera rushes up my left flank and smokes, attempting to make a run for my deployment zone and the mission objectives. Somehow needing 3+ rolls on all of them, Mike gets no banewolfs this turn and does no damage besides to the fire dragons.

Turn 3: I spread my wave serpents out moving the right most one out towards his left flank to exploit my range advantage over his remaining big guns, while moving the 3 Monsters into position to put the hurt on the command squad and psyker battle squad chimeras. The Avatar pops the psyker squads chimera, pinning them in the wreckage, while everyone’s lances manage to do nothing productive and the dark reapers bounce off the juicy side armor 10 of the flanking chimera.

Bottom of 3: Mike gets all 3 banewolves and moves 2 on to take out the furthest right wave serpent from behind, and the last to attempt the same on eldrad’s ride. The flanking chimera makes my deployment zone in the corner and the command squad attempts to shield the psykers by offering a chimera to shoot / punch. Demolisher finally puts a wound on the avatar, but only 1. The right banewolves take out the right wave serpent, but the middle one fails to slow Eldrad.

Turn 4: I consolidate into position to finish the psykers and put the hurt on the command squad, while Avenger team 2 and a wraithlord gain line of sight on the corner flanking chimera. The Avatar meltas open the command squad chimera, killing 4 models in the explosion, while the forward wraithlord flamers the psykers to death. The back wraithlord takes out the flanking chimera killing 3, allowing the dark reapers to finish off the squad inside, leaving mike with only the 3 banewolves, a demolisher staring the Avatar and 4 bright lances in the face, and the last set of plasma vets hiding behind the demolisher. At this point I have secured all objectives for myself while blocking Mike’s zone with Eldrad’s serpent and he concedes, not wanting to watch his last few vehicles take more punishment.

Full Points + Bonus: 21 battle

Round 2: Spear head, Primary: Capture and Control, Secondary: Have 2 non-scoring units in your opponents deployment zone, Tertiary: Have a non-scoring unit within 6” of your opponents long table edge. Bonus: Kill all opponent’s fast attack +1, Kill all opponent’s heavy support +1

I was matched up against Matt, a local player who picked up the game after I moved to away, so we’d not previously met. He had a Space Marine army he’d only begun painting a month ago, but it was 90% done and looked great. His list was roughly:
Librarian with Terminator armor, Vortex of Doom, Gate of Infinity, Storm Shield
Sternguard x 10 w/ 4 combi meltas, powerfist
Drop Pod with Deathwind
Sternguard x 10 w/ 3 combi meltas, powerfist
Drop pod with Deathwind
Dreadnaught w/ Multimelta
Drop pod with Deathwind
Tactical Squad x 10 w/ Meltagun, plasma cannon, powerfist
Tacitcal Squad x 10 w/ meltagun, multimelta, powerfist
Rhino
Land Speeder w/ MM
Land Raider Crusader w/ MM
Devastators x 5 w/ 2LC, 1 ML
Predator w/ Auto cannon, Heavy Bolters

I again won the roll to set up and took first turn, leaving him with a deployment zone containing a small forest and a hill. I setup my forces with the Avatar and Wraithlords again forming a wall infront of Eldrad’s serpent on my far front left as near the table center as possible. I fit the Dark Reapers in some ruins in the middle of my zone while keeping a set of fire dragons back with the second dire avengers to protect the base from the incoming drop pods and dreadnaught. The other fire dragons go dead center on the table (the furthest right point in my deployment zone) forcing him to either place his landraider near either my Monsters or my Meltas

He sets the landraider up nearest my fire dragons with the rhino behind it and combat squads the Plasma cannon tactical into the forest in his zone with his base while putting the melta/fist in the Landraider. The devs take refuge near a wall closest Eldrad and my monsters while the predator hides in the back to take shots at me while avoiding my back most lances. Drop pods and Land Speeder in reserve (deep strike) and Librarian attached to 3-combi melta sternguard.

Turn 1: I fortune the avatar and eldrad again, guiding a wraithlord. I slide Eldrad 18 inches out of the way towards his long table edge, getting the wraithlords and avatar more central to the table and moving my home base fire dragons into the void Eldrad vacated. Right Fire dragons slide 12 inches further right for a clear shot on the land raider with their lance. Dark Reapers kill everyone but a lascannon in the dev squad, but he passes morale. 4 lances later and I’ve not even scratched the land raider. I star engines the left fire dragons and Eldrad into a back to back position to minimize the rear shots I’ll take from drop podded melta.

Bottom 1: He brings both sets of sternguard in response to my Lance having transports and the devastation caused by the Reapers. Land raider moves into position to shoot, keeping the rhino in tow, rhino smokes. Predator and Land raider empty shots into the Avatar who saves everything. The all sternguard squads had combat squaded. The 4 combi-meltas that landed next to the home base Avenger’s wave serpent stuck together to shoot the transport, getting only a shaken result (thanks to spirit stones). Their 5 bolter armed friends however shoot hellfire rounds into the dark reapers killing 2. The other sternguard’s 3 combi-meltas go after the fire dragon’s wave serpent located back to back with Eldrad, but 4+ cover for fast moving saves it. The other half with the Librarian fire hellfire shots into the closest wraithlord while attempted vortex of doom. Eldrad’s psychic defense causes it to backfire, resulting in the template centering on the librarian, who wounds himself, fails the 3+ invulnerable, and vanishes beneath his own str 10 spell. The 5 sternguard with him however wound the wraithlord 8 times and I fail 3, dying.

Turn 2: I doom 2 of the combat squads nearest my homebase and Avengers, while putting fortune on Eldrad’s serpent. Eldrad speeds off towards my opponents table edge again, attempting to take the long way around the back towards the predator. Home fire dragons move nowhere productive, hoping to use their lance for something. Home Avengers unload in order to pop a combat squad in their midst, while the right fire dragons move up and dump out next to the land raider. Remaining wraithlord moves on a sternguard half and the Avatar does the same for the other half. Reapers only manage to kill 2 sternguard next to home base thanks to terrible to hit rolls. The home Avengers fare better killing 4 of their assigned half. The wraithlord gets 1 with his flamer, and the avatar 1 with his melta, leaving 4 each in their groups. Fire dragons whiff on the landraider with 4 of 6 shots, and only manage 1 glance, which stuns it (though he was without armor, so it cant move) and lances bounce off things while Eldrad decides to menace the lone lascannon by getting in creepy proximity with star engines. Assaults see the wraithlord into his sternguard killing 2 but taking 1 back from power fist and they stick. Avatar smacks his 4 to death, and consolidates menacingly towards the stunned land raider. Avengers roll a lot but cant hurt the lone sternguard they charged, but don’t take damage in return.

Bottom 2: He gets the dreadnaught but not the speeder, and with a weird scatter manages to land directly between his other 2 drop pods creating a 3 pod wall cutting off my base from the center of the board. The rhino squad gets out to handle the fire dragons, and uses their rhino to wall off their flank from a sneaky back door Eldrad. The predator again bounces bullets off the Avatar, but the Land Raider’s machine spirited assault cannon puts 1 wound on him. The rhino tactical annihilate the fire dragons with a sound rapid fire. The plasma cannon bounces off their wave serpent, and the lascannon does the same with Eldrad’s. The 3 man sternguard team combines with both deathwind launchers to kill the remaining 3 reapers and the Dreadnaught misses the close fire dragon’s wave serpent with his multimelta. My Avengers punch the solo sternguard to death, and the wraithlord finishes his group, and consolidates right towards the dreadnaught.

Turn 3: I doom the rhino squad only to find out later nothing could have damaged them anyway, and fortune Eldrad for safety, then proceed to tank shock the lascannon into running, and later star engines back into position to escort him safely to the board edge. I move up and dump the home fire dragons into position to start working on removing the drop pod wall, and bring the Avatar into position to melta the landraider, but shift the empty fire dragon wave serpent to the opposite side of the land raider for help. The Home Avengers shoot the 3 man sternguard into oblivion, while the fire dragons remove the first drop pod. The 2 wave serpents and wraithlord only manage to weapon destroy the dreadnaught, but wisely take his close combat arm so the lord can finish him safely in combat. The avatar and the last wave serpent mange to immobilize the land raider, but nothing more. Combat sees the Avatar only penetrate once, removing the assault cannon, and the wraithlord removes the multimelta and immobilizes the dreadnaught, leaving him with no arms but alive.

Bottom 3: Land speeder comes in right behind the former fire dragon wave serpent aimed at his landraider. Lascannon runs of the table thanks to Eldrad’s escort. The combat squad in the land raider stays inside and the rhino squad also fails to move. His land speeder immobilizes the wave serpent aimed at his landraider, but between the land raider, rhino squad, and plasma cannon team, the Avatar takes no damage. I lose 3 fire dragons to deathwind launchers, but pass leadership. Still touching the land raider, he manages to remove the multimelta and a hurricane bolter thanks to 2 more weapon destroys.

Turn 4: I move the avatar off the land raider to fight the rhino squad, position the fire dragons to continue their drop pod duty, move the wraithlord to eliminate the 3rd pod, and jump the avengers back in their home wave serpent, having secured my base. The mobile fire dragon wave serpent lines up a shot on the land speeder, and Eldrad moves into the side arc of the predator for an easier lance roll. Fire dragons rid me of a drop pod as does the Wraith lord lance, fire dragons survive the explosions. The mobile fire dragon wave serpent wrecks the landspeeder while Eldrad’s misses the predator, but the immobilized serpent explodes it. The landraider dodges a lance from the home serpent, and the Avatar shoots and kills a guy then charges the rhino squad. He kills all 5 worth of his attacks, and takes no wounds in return, causing them to break, and somehow even with a 2 initiative advantage they escape and flee 11 inches to be near the immobile wave serpent.

Bottom 4: The half tactical get out of the land raider and attempt to do something about the avatar. His fleeing rhino squad was too close to the wave serpent and keeps going. The rhino squad fails to wound the avatar in either shooting or combat, and dies to wounds + no retreat wounds for getting caught on initiative after breaking. The plasma cannon again bounces off Eldrad’s wave serpent.

Turn 5: I doom both living squads and move the wave serpent with Eldrad into the center of his deployment zone and disembark to bladestorm him off his objective. I fly the mobile fire dragon wave serpent to his table edge for the objective. Shooting sees the landraider finally dead, as well as the combat squad in his base. A single lance shot from the immobile wave serpent kills 1 of the 4 remaining members of the rhino squad, forcing the already fleeing marines to run again, right off the table. His entire army is dead and I have my 2 wave serpents, Eldrad and the Avatar is his zone, a wave serpent on the board edge, and my home base.

Both Bonus points give me 22 more battle points

Round 3: Spear Head, Primary: Seize Ground (5 objectives), Secondary: Secretly note an enemy troop selection, if you kill it you complete this, Tertiary: Have more than 2 troops choices alive at the end of the game

I’m matched up against Thomas “Goatboy” Reiddy, a local player and internet well known, playing a Space Wolf (goat) army roughly like this:
Canis Wolfborn
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf with Saga of Warrior, Frost Axe, Storm Shield
Rune Priest with Jaws and Living Lightning
Rune Priest with Living lightning and something else(he never cast anything but lightning)
Iron Priest on Thunderwolf with 4 cyber hounds
Fenrisian Wolves x 8
Fenrisian Wolves x 8
Grey hunters x 10 w/ melta, mark of the wulfen
Grey hunters x 9 w/ melta, mark of the wulfen
Rhino
Grey hunters x 9 w/ melta, mark of the wulfen
Rhino
Thunder wolf cav x 5 w/ powerfist
Land Raider Crusader w/ MM (and maybe armor)

Thomas wins the roll for turn but wants to see how I set up so he gives me first turn.

I take the right corner on the side of the table I started with. I deploy the dark reapers about 10 inches to the right of the center of the table, about 8 inches from my board edge, and up against a low wall for cover (but not granting it back). I stick a fire dragon wave serpent against the center of the table but only about 6 inches in from my long edge. The other fire dragons go behind a pile of rocks in the middle right of my deployment zone, and I place the weaker dire avengers aggressively about 20 inches in from the long table edge, and about 20 inches from the center of the board, effectively just closer to his table edge than the rock pile the fire dragons hid behind. I use the Avatar and Wraithlords to once again wall in Eldrad’s wave serpent on the dead center of the semi circle of non-deployment space, but about 4 inches back from the limit, to ensure his rune priests are too far away to prevent my powers in turn 1.

He counters my mimicking the half moon setup, placing both rhinos with grey hunters and rune priests as far to my right as possible, behind a tall hill about 4 inches from his long edge and side by side. The land raider takes the slot on the opposite side of the hill more into his deployment zone, with a squad of wolves covering the hill in between. The iron priest is as far forwards as possible in front of both the land raider and the wolves. His other wolf squad is providing and screen to the thunderwolves who occupy the remainder of the space up against the deployment border.

I use Eldrad’s redeploy and again roll 5, giving me 4 units to move, and relocate my entire monster wall + eldrad to stack up beside / behind the other Avenger wave serpent.

Turn 1: He fails to steal the initiative, and I managed to stay about 27 inches from the rune priests and fortune eldrad’s serpent and the avatar, and guide a wraithlord. The left back fire dragons go 18 inches out to the side trying to stay 24-25 from the back edge of the thunder wolves coming around and getting them. The other fire dragons slide a couple inches for line of sight purposes, but continue to use the pile of rocks as cover from the rune priests’ likely lightning attacks. The wimpy Avengers position their serpent for a shot on a rhino and Eldrad’s skimmer moves fast out of the way of things, while the Monsters slide only slightly forward, but more into line to protect the skimmers from dogs and the iron priest. The Dark Reapers manage to kill the 8 dog screen out from in front of the thunderwolves, and put a wound on a thunderwolf by virtue of the sergeant’s template. The front rhino (with the jaws priest) is shaken, but no other shooting of note. Eldrad slides back behind the monsters and other avengers

Bottom 1: The other dogs attempt to move forward but roll terrible and stay halway on the hill. Each rhino comes 6 inches towards my lines along the table edge to stay away from Monsters but allow the back priest to lightning. The Iron priest moves to line up a charge on a wraithlord. The thunderwolves come straight forwards towards the dark reapers through the gap created by the dead puppies. Land raider slides into better view and shoots at the avatar, doing nothing. The rune priest flings lightning at the wimpy avengers’ tank, but fails to damage it. Combat sees the Iron priest kill a wraithlord with thunderhammer attacks after the wraithlord missed everything (even with re-rolls)

Turn 2: Thomas manages to block all my psychic powers, forcing my hand. I close the bear trap around the thunderwolves, placing them at the open end of a V formed by the Dark Reapers and both fire dragon wave serpents, which drop their inventory and line up 75% of my high strength weapons to shoot at a single unit. Both avenger squads disembark and the wimps line up shots on the other 8 dog pack, while Eldrad goes after the iron priest with the help of a wraithlord, and the avatar steps between the dogs and Iron priest, leaving his options open. The Dark reapers tear into the Thunderwolves causing enough wounds to remove one and a half (previous damage) as well as put on a wound on Canis. The first fire dragon squad removes another model, leaving 4 total (fist, guy, Canis, lord) and the other fire dragons cause 5 wounds (or 1 each, killing another guy, wounding canis again, and the fist) The wave serpents realize the rest of the wounds will likely just bounce off the lord’s storm shield so they fire at the land raider wrecking it. The wimpy Avengers blade storm 7 of 8 puppies to death through cover, but the combined shooting of the Eldrad’s avengers, the wraithlord, and the Avatar only kill 3 of the Iron priest’s 4 dogs. The single puppy flees off the table, and the combined assault of the Avatar, Wraithlord, and Eldrad’s squad kill the Ironpriest.

Bottom 2: The 10 man grey hunters squad comes forward to get into combat with the middle fire dragons while the lord splits from canis and fist to go after the dark reapers, and canis + fist the left most fire dragons. The front rhino moves 12 inches to unload in rapid fire range of the wimpy Avengers, but the runepriest stays inside, while the back rhino simply unloads the squad at the table edge then moves to block the Avatar from reaching anything by being in the way. Rapid fire kills 7 of 10 wimpy Avengers, followed by combat killing 5 of 6 fire dragons against Canis, and the lone survival rolls a 3, sticking (against my wishes) while the other fire dragon squad is wiped out by grey hunters, and the wolf lord fails his charge into the reapers with low terrain rolls.

Turn 3: Unable to shoot into Canis with my Lances, I move into position to shoot at the wolf lord with both fire dragon tanks. The wimpy avenger’s serpent, having been shaken, tank shocks the grey hunters w/ Rune priest but they hold. The avatar simply moves to hit the empty rhino while Eldrad and crew try to back up as far as possible from potential danger. The last wraithlord moves up on the Priest-less grey hunters, along with the 3 remaining wimpy Avengers.

Dark Reapers kill 5 of the 10 grey hunters in the middle, causing them to break and run 11. The Avatar huffs and puffs and does nothing to the rhino. Eldrad continues trying to run. 3 wave serpent lances all hit and wound, getting 1 through the 3+ invulnerable on the Lord. Combat has the avatar immobilize the rhino, and the wraithlord kills 2 greyhunters, but his avenger friends die. The lone fire dragon fighting canis obviously dies.

Bottom 3: Thomas regroups the fleeing grey hunters and moves them towards an objective he can hide on. The wolf lord needs a good fleet + good terrain on the charge to read Eldrad, while Canis and fist line up on the Dark Reapers. A few good rolls later and the wimpy avenger’s wave serpent has lost its lance, and the lord makes his charge into Eldrad and friends. Canis kills the dark reapers. The wolf lord rolls terrible and only kills 2 avengers, but they fail to wound him back, roll super high on leadership, then low on initiative, and poof 375 points of character and troops are swept by the lord. Wraithlord kills another grey hunter but they hold (thomas’s mark of the wulfen was regularly rolling 5+ attacks a turn, but only getting 1-2 hits, then not rending) The avatar manages to kill the rhino this time.

Turn 4: The two fire dragon serpents spread out to deal with the remaining thunderwolves using Eldrad’s vacated tank as a shield from the wolf lord. The lance-less Avenger serpent tank shocks his grey hunters + rune priest again, who roll and 11 and leave the table. The avatar now has nothing to kill so he uses his run to get back towards the wolf lord to maybe wound him. The two fire dragon serpents both hit and wound finishing off Canis and the power first thunderwolf. The wraithlord kills another guy, Thomas misses 5 of 7 attacks, but holds leadership.

Bottom 4: Thomas moves the last rhino with only the priest as far towards the corner as he can, getting out to lightning something. The wolf lord goes after Eldrad’s tank and the 5 remaining grey hunters start to move further and further away towards my far left. No damage is done to Eldrad’s skimmer and the wraithlord finally kills both hits worth of grey hunters who break, escape, and flee the table.

Turn 5: The lance-less Avenger serpent tank shocks the ld8 grey hunters trying to escape to the left, who hold. Fire dragon wave serpents again both hit and wound, reducing the wolf lord to his final wound. The Avatar gets into position to try and melta the wolf lord on the following turn. The wraithlord gets into combat with the rhino and stuns it.

Bottom 5: Grey hunters move to melta the back of the wimpy avenger tank, but only weapon destroy the catapult away. The rune priests shakes a fire dragon wave serpent, then the wolf lord punches its lance off. The wraithlord mauls the rhino into oblivion.

Roll for turn 6 succeeds.

Turn 6: The wraithlord moves into position to charge the rune priest, while Eldrad’s skimmer backs as far away from the wolf lord as possible. The lance-less Avenger serpent tank shocks the grey hunters again, who pass and try to melta gun it, only shaking it and losing their melta gun. The lance-less fire dragon serpent moves 24 inches to line up a star engines tank shock on those same grey hunters, who fail this time and flee the table. The other wave serpent also leaves the lord’s charge range. The wraithlord vaporizes the runepriest with his lance, but between the remaining two lances and the avatar’s melta gun, the wolf lord lives by passing all saves.

During this turn a few heated arguments broke out regarding whether or not certain rules allowed certain actions or not, and the hotly contested nature of the game got the better of both Thomas and I. After consulting the tournament organizer for a ruling, Thomas continued to argue and due to certain things he said and the language used he was DQ’d giving me full points for the round without having to have killed the wolf lord. It took us all of 10 seconds to cool down from the hotly contested nature of the game, and both apologize to each other, resolve the dispute peaceably and remind each other we’re too good of friends to behave like that. We decided to play out the game to determine if I could have gotten full points anyway.

So before the bottom of turn 6 we rolled to see if turn 7 occurred, which it did, so Thomas and I agreed his best bet to survive was to charge the Avatar (the only target he could reach) And hope his storm shield would earn him a temporary stalemate and protect him from the 3 lances and a melta gun in the next turn, as well as a probable charge.

The Avatar ended up wounding him twice and he failed the last save, killing the wolf lord and giving me the full point win anyway (any time you completely kill your opponent’s army you get credit for all mission objectives and receive full battle points).

Full point win: 20 battle points

My perfect score of 63 battle points put me clear of the pack for the first place finish and I ended the 2009 tournament season strong, having completely annihilated the forces of all 3 players I faced.
